Nanoparticles Against Cancer

About

Plasma-engineered nanoparticles for precision cancer therapy

This innovative nanoplatform addresses a critical gap in cancer therapy by creating versatile nanoparticles capable of delivering multiple therapeutic agents and diagnostic tools simultaneously. Utilising plasma technology, these nanoparticles are functionalized with reactive radicals, allowing them to bind a variety of cancer-targeting cargos without harmful chemicals. The modular system, optimised to overcome biological barriers, offers a personalised, eco-friendly solution for effective drug delivery, specifically targeting aggressive cancers like triple-negative breast cancer

Elmer Austria Jr. is a Biomedical Engineering PhD student from the University of Sydney. His research work is focused on the synthesis and functionalization of plasma-polymerized nanoparticles for cancer therapy, with breast cancer serving as one example. His work on drug-conjugated PPNs made him one of the finalists of the 2024 AusHealth CureCell Awards, and his research has been presented in both Australian and international conferences. He earned his master’s degree in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of the Philippines – Diliman, where his research focused on using magnetic nanoparticles for the enrichment of glycoproteins and glycopeptides. more
