About

Protect astronauts with human waste

POR is a construction material for lunar habitats made from human waste. Waste management on current space missions still depends on earth to resupply material and incinerate the waste, making deep space exploration impossible. POR addresses this problem by proposing a closed-loop system that brings human waste back into mission habitats as a radiation shield material. This system would allow space missions to be independent from Earth. POR uses regenerative life support technologies from NASA to effectively process human waste into repurposed plastic. Using water and the new repurposed plastic as construction materials, a vascular system for shielding radiation was developed. This leaf-inspired structure allows water to distribute evenly and provides mechanical resilience for a lunar colony.

Shu Ou is a product design student at ArtCenter College of Design. She embraced field research to uncover authentic, unseen human needs. Having both mechanical engineering and industrial design background has enabled her to approach design both humanistically and functionally. Being always curious about the relationship between human behavior, emerging technologies, and the environment, she wants to be part of the design field that creates products that are purposeful and sustainable.more
