# 2018 Rafts for Phytoremediation of Surface Water |
Rafts for Phytoremediation of Surface Water is an organic tool for treating water pollution. The project is based on phytoremediation — the use of living, green plants for the removal, containment or degradation of contaminants in soil and water. Taking cues from constructed wetlands, which use phytoremediation to clean up wastewater discharged from cities and industry, this project uses plants to remediate contaminated surface waters prior to entering the drinking water system. The plants are introduced via a raft system that floats in surface water in order to remove contaminants through the plants’ roots. Unlike the systems currently employed in constructed wetlands, this project was designed with an emphasis on usability and manufacturing, making it a widely applicable solution to water pollution around the world.
