# 2017 Solar Dryer |
The Solar Dryer is a solar-powered refrigerator, designed to address the surplus and waste of fruit in a number of African countries. By solar drying it, fruit can last for a much longer period, without losing valuable vitamins and nutrients. The device uses a 'solar collector', a horizontal bed that layers a transparent surface, an absorbent sheet, and insulation to collect solar rays. The heat generated then moves up the bed to the storage cabin (an upcycled refrigerator), where it dries the fruit. To accelerate the drying process, users can attach light bulbs (if electricity is available) and a ventilation system that regulates fan speed in line with humidity and temperature. The system is easy to build and inexpensive to use. Based on a design method that makes use of used and damaged refrigerators, Solar Dryer transforms waste into conservation.
