Twinkle

About

Flying lights for poorly lit streets

Twinkle is a futuristic proposal for individualized urban lighting. The project is inspired by the inadequacies of current street light systems, which leave many areas poorly lit, making neighbourhoods less safe — in perception and in reality. Inspired by fireflies, the project imagines a population of luminous techno-creatures that live on light posts. During the daytime, they rest and recharge themselves by expanding their solar ‘wings’. At night, they interact with pedestrians to improve urban safety without surveillance. An individual Twinkle acts as a companion, bathing each person with light as she walks along the street. They are designed to provide a playful, non-threatening presence that reassures pedestrians and adds life to even the most poorly lit area.
