Founded in 2002 by the Ankole Diocese of the Anglican Church of Uganda, Bishop Stuart University (BSU) is a private, not-for-profit institution located in Western Uganda, just 3.5 km from Mbarara City. Chartered in 2014, BSU is one of the fastest-growing and top-ranked universities in Uganda, holding the 10th position according to the Webometrics (Ranking Web of Universities) as of July 2020.
BSU's history traces back to Bishop Tucker Theological College in Mukono, founded in 1913 as a normal school, which eventually evolved into Uganda Christian University in 1992. The institution later moved to Ruharo, near Mbarara High School, in 1952, where Rev. Hugh F. Hodge established Bishop Stuart College, a teacher training college, before it grew into the university it is today.
