About

AlmenarUI is a physical user interface designed for radiology within Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality. The work of a radiologist consists of analysing scans from Ultrasound, MRI, and CT to identify anomalies within the scanned tissue. This process generally occurs inside rooms that are darkened, similar to a movie theatre. Prolonged exposure to these dark conditions has been shown to negatively affect the radiologists. AlmenarUI recreates this dark room in virtual space, creating a more dynamic, responsive and ultimately healthier environment in which to analyse scans. The interface combines digital and physical elements to provide a video game-like experience that can be done alone or in collaboration with other medical professionals.

My name is Felix van de Donk. I started studying industrial design in 2012. Along the way I have increasingly focused on user interface design. With the advent of AR/VR technologies I saw opportunities for designers to make the difference. I hope we can soon replace many common products with augmented versions. This innovation allows for products that can grow and improve significantly through software updates. I hope this way some day we can vastly reduce the need for new physical products and have the software domain replace this need. The concept I am showcasing this event is an example of what we can achieve when we use high tech user input in a virtual environment.
