Dystopian Places is a collection of wearable devices that simulate environmental problems. These simulations are designed to provide a direct, personal experience with the dangers of pollution and climate change. For example, water hypoxia, an environmental phenomenon where the concentration of dissolved oxygen in water decreases to a level that can no longer support life, is simulated by a mask that restricts airflow to its wearer. To begin, the user selects from a map of badly polluted areas. The mask then reduces available oxygen, effectively simulating the experience of fish living in that area.

Yiannis Vogdanis is a multidisciplinary designer who started his career in Rome studying fine arts. He has always had a passion for exploring form and shape, and testing materials to their limit; today his focus has shifted into using design as a tool to test our ability to change what we know isn't working.
