Flex

About

Flex seeks to redefine mobility for the elderly through the notion of dynamic walking. Flex applies an elastic shoe design to a walking cane that blossoms on contact with the ground. This expansion of the cane’s base increases surface contact, making it more stable - a reliable anchor for the next step. Meanwhile, an internal spring mechanism helps provide additional cushioning and allows the cane’s blossoming base to return to a streamlined profile while off the ground.

As a designer, I personally don’t believe in the “save the world” concept. Instead, I consider design into the modern world as a conversation between people and products. Thus, common sense is of utmost importance and is often the foundation stone for a relatively good design. Without the proper communication between designer and the consumer, how can there be an end-product that satisfies the latter? That being said, I am currently still in the midst of searching for a product that fulfils that criterion. My philosophy is simple. Design with common sense such that it is intuitive yet simplistic. Thankfully, that approach worked well for me as I have managed to clinch awards such as the second runner up for IKEA Young Designer’s Award 2015.
