SAHAYAK – Load Carrying Aid for Porters

SAHAYAK – Load Carrying Aid for Porters

About

SAHAYAK is a load-bearing backpack designed for porters working on railway platforms in India. Although these labourers provide an important service moving luggage and other goods to and from the trains, they are poorly paid and often suffer long-term health problems from years of carrying heavy objects on their heads. SAHAYAK is designed to lessen their burden by equipping the porters with a backpack that transfers the load from the wearer’s head to his shoulders, thus protecting the spine. The design uses an inexpensive torsion spring to distribute the load throughout the backpack’s frame, reducing the load born by the user’s head and neck by 75 percent.
