WasteWise

WasteWise

About

WasteWise addresses the environmental and economic impact of fats, oils, and grease (FOG) in wastewater with AeroSil Capture, a novel interceptor using reusable ceramic aerogels. These water-repellent materials absorb up to 10 times their weight in FOG, outperforming traditional grease traps. The system captures over 96% of FOG in field tests and enables off-site regeneration and conversion of waste into valuable products such as biodiesel and hydrogen, offering a scalable solution for cleaner water and sustainable waste recovery

Ariel Riofrio is a PhD researcher at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, specializing in sustainable materials and environmental engineering. His work focuses on transforming waste into valuable resources, with a particular emphasis on fats, oils, and grease (FOG) recovery from sewers. By developing advanced silica aerogels and interception systems, he aims to reduce urban pollution and unlock circular economy pathways. Ariel’s research bridges material science and environmental sustainability, offering scalable solutions for cleaner cities and greener energy futures.
