Prototypes for Humanity Launches Its First Academic Publication, Featuring 56 Peer-reviewed Research Papers
Prototypes for Humanity has published its first volume of its academic publication. Prototypes for Humanity 2025 Short Papers Platform Conference Proceedings brings together 56 short papers presented by researchers during the 2025 conference and marks a significant milestone for the programme.
The Short Papers Platform
Launched in 2025, the Short Papers Platform invites professors worldwide to contribute research addressing critical global challenges, creating a space for knowledge development and exchange in critical areas for society, businesses, and government. Each year, a selection of abstracts is developed into short papers, following a rigorous peer review process, which are then presented at the conference and formally gathered in an official academic publication.
The research is intended to support pragmatic problem-solving and innovation at the intersection of academia and real-world needs, with the ultimate aim of delivering positive economic and social impact.
Inside the 2025 publication
The 2025 volume features 56 short papers, selected from more than 600 abstract submissions by professors at institutions in 76 countries. Papers were chosen for their insight, innovation and impact, and are grouped across seven research themes.
Contributors are based across Europe, North America, Asia, Africa, the Middle East and Australia, and themes include:
Wellbeing and Health Futures, bringing together work on precision cancer treatment, maternal health and antimicrobial testing. Artificial Intelligence and Augmented Intelligence, exploring applications in healthcare alongside human-machine collaboration and Industry 5.0. Environmental Sustainability and Climate Action, addressing sustainable materials, waste reduction, resource recovery and climate-related challenges, while Sustainable and Resilient Infrastructure considers materials, urban environments and design for changing and emergency conditions.
Socio-Economic Empowerment and Innovation looks at community development, smallholder agriculture, heritage and local economies. Two further categories, Open and Speculative, give researchers space to explore emerging questions and future possibilities that cross established disciplines.
The papers reflect different stages of research and development, from conceptual frameworks and experimental studies through to prototype development and pilot studies. Several papers document testing already underway, including an affordable AI-powered brainwave reader designed to help people with motor neurone disease communicate through their thoughts; new approaches to transforming agricultural and plant-based waste into compostable hygiene materials; AI-powered tools for cardiac investigation, pain measurement and clinical decision-support; and digital twin technologies exploring how cities and built environments can become more sustainable and resilient.
The platform aims to amplify the impact of professors’ research by also publishing the proceedings, turning a moment of exchange into a permanent, citable record. The research stays documented and accessible, reaching researchers, industry and policymakers beyond the conference.
Together, the 56 papers offer a snapshot of outcomes-oriented research from around the world, and illustrate the power of academia to answer shared, complex problems.
