About

Epilepsy and stroke affect millions of people, while effective medicines can be costly or difficult to access, particularly in countries dependent on imports. This project formulates the neuroprotective compound Z-Acid as a nasal treatment that adheres to the nasal lining, improving absorption and avoiding injections. Preclinical studies found that it controlled induced epileptic activity in rats and showed a favourable safety profile across several animal models. Further clinical development could support more affordable treatments and strengthen pharmaceutical manufacturing in Pakistan.

My research focuses on discovering and developing novel bioactive compounds, antimicrobial peptides, and peptide-based therapeutics for infectious and non-infectious diseases. Our research evaluates natural products, synthetic compounds, and nanoformulations for their antimicrobial, anticancer, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory activities. Particular emphasis is placed on antimicrobial resistance, biofilm-associated infections, and the molecular mechanisms underlying therapeutic activity. We employ a combination of in vitro and in vivo models to investigate efficacy, toxicity, pharmacological activity, and mechanisms of action. Our research also explores drug repurposing and combination therapy to develop novel therapeutic strategies against challenging diseases.
