Atlas

Atlas

Project Overview

About

Atlas is a compact, mobile neurosurgical navigation system that guides safe placement of external ventricular drains (EVDs) in patients with hydrocephalus or severe brain trauma. Using a mechanical measuring arm and a mobile app, it aligns the skull with the patient’s CT/MRI images with high precision, without the need for expensive infrastructure or neurosurgeons. By enabling timely, image-guided interventions in resource-limited settings, Atlas offers a practical, affordable, life-saving solution in critical neurological emergencies

Alexander D. Smith is an MD/PhD candidate at the Carle Illinois College of Medicine and University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. He designs low-cost robotic navigation and imaging systems to expand access to neurosurgical and diagnostic vision care in underserved settings. He is a National Institutes of Health National Research Service Award Fellow. Alexander founded Atlas Medtech to translate his research on neurosurgical navigation systems into an organization with a global health focus, and the Atlas Neurosurgical Navigation System is the company's first device aimed to increase access to lifesaving healthcare worldwide.
