Mexico Paralelo is a data graphics device that demonstrates the consequences of urban development in Mexico City. The Mexican capital is one of the largest cities in the world, with a metropolitan area housing some 21.2 million people. Water scarcity is a critical issue, restricting future development and calling for a radical rethinking of the city’s infrastructure. The device rotates at one revolution per day, using real data and speculative algorithms to illustrate three variables and their impact on the city: traffic level, CO2 levels and ambient temperature.

Fernanda Morrill, Victor Flores, Marco Jurado e Irving Villanueva are four Mexican industrial design graduates that conform the team of Mexico Paralelo. The project is part of Critical Data, an academic program in collaboration with studio Jose de la O, where students use digital data and process it into critical design to question cultural aspects, solve problems or understand complex social questions.
