SpeechSense Earmuffs

SpeechSense Earmuffs

Project Overview

About

By combining vibroacoustic-responsive polymers with advanced acoustic design, these earmuffs block hazardous industrial noise while allowing speech to pass through. They achieve up to 70% speech intelligibility even at 100 dB, reducing the need to remove protection and lowering accident risk. With a noise reduction rating (SNR) of 28–29 dB, they match conventional earmuffs in safety, but without electronics—offering a low-cost, passive solution for safer, clearer communication in noisy workplaces

Musa’ab Ejaz is a PhD student in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP). He earned his Master of Engineering in Mechanical Department from Lehigh University, Pennsylvania, USA. He has also worked as a technical trainer for 8 years in Saudi Arabia. His research interests include acoustic metamaterials, noise control engineering, and vibroacoustics. He is currently working on using acoustic metamaterial lattice structures with shape memory polymers (SMPs) for selective frequency filtration and their applications.
